Gulshat Omarova

Gulshat Diasovna Omarova (Template:Lang-kz; sometimes credited as Guka Omarova, born 8 October 1968) is a Kazakh film director, actress and screen writer. She was born in Alma-Ata, Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic and now lives in Rotterdam, Netherlands. In 2004, Omarova was presented the Alice Award for Best Female Director by the Copenhagen International Film Festival for her film, Shiza.

Biography

In 1984, Omarova graduated from the journalism faculty of Al-Farabi University. From 1986 to 1988 she worked in television as assistant administrator and director. In 1998, she graduated from the State Institute of Theatre and Cinema in Almaty on specialty "documentary film and television director". Since 2001, she has been living and working in the Netherlands. The first notable role was in the film Shiza, which succeeded in winning of several prizes.
