More than 1,200 letters have been sent to parents and carers who may have crossed paths with a man charged with criminal offences involving children.

The man, whose name is subject to a strict non-publication order, is understood to have worked with children in Sydney's northern suburbs and the CBD.

He was charged by the Australian Federal Police (AFP) last October over allegations of inappropriate behaviour and has remained in custody ever since.

In a joint statement on Thursday, the AFP and NSW Police stated the man's alleged offending involved a 'very small number of children'.

A joint AFP and NSW Police taskforce has contacted parents and carers of children who may have been in contact with a childcare worker alleged to have acted inappropriately

The alleged offender was arrested in October last year and remains in custody as victim identification activities continue

Authorities sent as many as 1,200 letters to parents and carers of any children who may have had contact with the man, the Sydney Morning Herald reported.

Investigators asked parents and carers who received the letter to read it carefully, including instructions for contacting a hotline with any relevant concerns.

The letters were sent as part of a victim identification process led by NSW Police and the AFP under the Joint Child Protection Response Program.

They are working in partnership with NSW Health, NSW Department of Communities and Justice, NSW Department of Education and Training and the Office of the Children's Guardian.

More to come.
