From 1993-1996 he worked at the [[European Bank for Reconstruction and Development]] in [[London]], during which time he also earned an MS in Economics and Finance at the [[University of London]]. He then returned to Kazakhstan, where from 1996-1998 he served as the deputy chairman of the National Bank of Kazakhstan.
