No jobs for Tihar rape convicts<br>By NEETU CHANDRA <br><br>Published: 22:32 GMT, 5 January 2013 | Updated: 23:41 GMT, 5 January 2013<br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br>View <br>comments<br><br>Even as the country's lawmakers contemplate stringent possible laws to punish rape convicts, the Tihar Jail authorities have already initiated steps to deter men from committing crimes against women. <br><br>From now onwards, men convicted for rape and similar crimes will not be included in the regular campus placement drive conducted by the jail. <br><br>The decision follows the recent public outcry over the brutal gang-rape of a 23-year-old paramedic in a moving bus in south Delhi. <br><br><br><br>Tihar prisoners during a recruitment drive in the jail<br><br>"We will not include rape accused in the campus placement drive this month. The ongoing protest over the gang rape and murder of the student in Delhi has shaken all of us. We noted the hatred associated with this crime and decided not to help rape convicts get any job," said Lokesh Chandra, superintendent, Tihar Jail.<br><br>"In jail, we help all inmates reform their conduct through counselling and related activities. The biggest opportunity for them is getting a job through our placement drive. Tihar conducts the recruitment drives as and when required during the year. A convict should have served his sentence or be about to complete it within six months to be eligible for a job. <br><br>Earlier, undertrials were also allowed to take part in the placement drive but now the jail authorities have excluded them from the process. "The idea of giving employment to rape convicts was always debatable. <br><br>So we finally decided not to help them get a job though we would try our level best to help them in getting reformed as human beings," said Sunil Gupta, public relations officer, Tihar Jail. <br><br>The recruitment drive on Tihar premises started from February 25, 2010. So far, the jail authorities have helped two rape accused get jobs in private companies.<br><br>"Recently, a rape accused [https://www.ourmidland.com/search/?action=search&firstRequest=1&searchindex=solr&query=applied applied] for bail in the high court after he got a job in a private company through our placement drive. The court came to us for comments. We told them that we are in the process of formulating a policy not to provide jobs to rape accused. <br><br>"The court finally rejected his plea and he did not get the job. By making it a policy to keep rape accused away from the placement drive, we will discourage people from committing such crimes," he said.<br><br>Tihar jail conducted its fifth campus placement in May last year.
