It has two peaks, its highest peak "Tsast Uul" ({{lang-mn|Цаст}}, ''lit. "snow-covered peak"'') has an elevation of {{convert|4193|m|ft|0}} and another peak same named "Tsambagarav" (48.655196,90.847063). The mountain is the stand-alone eternally snow-capped mountain of the Mongol Altai<ref>[http://web.archive.org/web/20101222171459/http://nomadicjourneys.com/trips/treks/western-mongolia-trek Nomadic Journeys Western Mongolia Trek]</ref> and the regional [[sacred mountain]] in Mongolia.

Massif of Tsast Uul-Tsambagarev. Italians Gianni Pais Becher, Gastone Lorenzini and Elziro Molin climbed in western Mongolia in June and July. In late June, they first climbed Tsast Uul (4250 meters, 13,944 feet), the second highest peak in Mongolia, by the normal route. On June 27, they established Base Camp at 2520 meters north of the massif and the next day placed a camp in an alpine meadow. On June 29 the three Italians with Mongolians Jndonpuncav, Gotov, Samubun and Battulga climbed a 55° ice slope to the summit of unclimbed P 4030 (13,222 feet). On June 30, they moved camp to Tavan Betchir. On July 2, they started for a peak they had seen from Tsast Uul. They had to climb over a ridge to 3800 meters, down the far side, across a glacier and finally up the icy, 60° northwest face of P 4150 (13,616 feet). The summit was reached by Pais Becher, Molin, Mongolians Dorjpalam, Tumentogootch, Damba, Rentsenbyamba, Gaadamba and Vantchig

==Geography==
Tian Shan is north and west of the [[Taklamakan Desert]] and directly north of the [[Tarim Basin]] in the border region of [[Kazakhstan]], [[Kyrgyzstan]], and [[Xinjiang]] in [[northwest China]]. In the south it links up with the [[Pamir Mountains]] and to north and east it meets the [[Altai Mountains]] of [[Mongolia]]. 

In Western cartography such as [[National Geographic Society|National Geographic]], the eastern end of the Tian Shan is usually understood to be east of [[Ürümqi]], with the range to the east of that city known as the [[Bogda Shan]] as part of the Tian Shan. Chinese cartography from the [[Han Dynasty]] to the present agrees, with the Tian Shan including the Bogda Shan and [[Barkol]] ranges.

The Tian Shan are a part of the [[Himalayas|Himalayan]] [[Orogeny|orogenic belt]], which was formed by the collision of the Indian and Eurasian [[Plate tectonics|plates]] in the [[Cenozoic]] era. They are one of the longest mountain ranges in [[Central Asia]] and stretch some {{convert|2800|km}} eastward from [[Tashkent]] in [[Uzbekistan]].

The highest peak in the Tian Shan is the [[Victory Peak]] (пик Победы in Russian or [[Jengish Chokusu]] in Kyrgyzstan) which, at {{convert|7439|m|ft|0}}, is also the [[Geography of Kyrgyzstan|highest point in Kyrgyzstan]] and is on the border with China.
The Tian Shan's second highest peak, [[Khan Tengri]] (Lord of the Spirits), straddles the Kazakhstan-Kyrgyzstan border and at {{convert|7010|m}} is the [[Geography of Kazakhstan|highest point of Kazakhstan]]. [[Mountaineering|Mountaineers]] class these as the two most northerly peaks over {{convert|7000|m}} in the world.

The [[Torugart Pass]], at {{convert|3752|m|ft|0}}, is located at the border between Kyrgyzstan and China's [[Xinjiang]] province. The forested [[Alatau]] ranges, which are at a lower altitude in the northern part of the Tian Shan, are inhabited by pastoral tribes that speak [[Turkic languages]].

The Tian Shan are separated from the [[Tibetan Plateau]] by the [[Taklimakan Desert]] and the [[Tarim Basin]] to the south.

The major rivers rising in the Tian Shan are the [[Syr Darya]], the [[Ili River]] and the [[Tarim River]]. The [[Aksu Canyon]] is a notable feature in the northwestern Tian Shan.

Continuous [[permafrost]] is typically found in the Tian Shan starting at the elevation of about 3,500-3,700 m above the sea level. Discontinuous alpine permafrost usually occurs down to 2,700-3,300 m, but in certain locations, due to the peculiarity of the [[Aspect (geography)|aspect]] and the [[microclimate]], it can be found at elevations as low as 2,000 m.<ref>{{citation|contribution=Geocryology in Mt. One of the first Europeans to visit and the first to describe the Tian Shan in detail was the Russian explorer [[Peter Semenov of Tian Shan|Peter Semenov]], who did so in the 1850s.

==Ranges==

The Tian Shan have a number of named ranges which are often mentioned separately (all distances are approximate).

In China the Tian Shan starts north of [[Kumul City]] (Hami) with the U-shaped Barkol Mountains, from about {{convert|600|to|400|km}} east of [[Ürümqi]]. Then the [[Bogda Shan]] (god mountains) run from {{convert|350|to|40|km}} east of Ürümqi. Then there is a low area between Ürümqi and the [[Turfan Depression]]. The [[Borohoro Mountains]] start just south of Ürümqi and run west northwest {{convert|450|km}} separating [[Dzungaria]] from the [[Ili River]] basin. Their north end abuts on the {{convert|200|km}} [[Dzungarian Alatau]] which run east northeast along Sino-Kazakh border. They start {{convert|50|km}} east of [[Taldykorgan]] in Kazakhstan and end at the [[Dzungarian Gate]]. The [[Dzungarian Alatau]] in the north, the [[Borohoro Mountains]] in the middle and the [[Ketmen Range]] in the south make a reversed Z or S, the northeast enclosing part of Dzungaria and the southwest enclosing the upper Ili valley.

In [[Kyrgyzstan]] the main line of the Tian Shan continues as [[Narat Range]] from the base of the [[Borohoro]]s west {{convert|570|km}} to the point where China, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan meet. Here is the highest part of the range – the Central Tian Shan, with [[Peak Pobeda]] ([[Kakshaal Too]] range) and [[Khan Tengri]]. West of this, the Tian Shan split into an ‘eye’, with [[Issyk Kul Lake]] in its center. The south side of the lake is the [[Terskey Alatau]] and the north side the [[Kyungey Ala-Too]] (shady and sunny Ala-Too). North of the Kyungey Ala-Too and parallel to it is the [[Trans-Ili Alatau]] in Kazakhstan just south of [[Almaty]]. West of the eye, the range continues {{convert|400|km}} as the [[Kyrgyz Ala-Too]], separating [[Chui Province]] from [[Naryn Oblast]] and then Kazakhstan from the [[Talas Province]]. This [[oblast]] is the upper valley of the [[Talas River]], the south side of which is the {{convert|200|km}} [[Talas Ala-Too Range]] ('Ala-too' is a Kirgiz spelling of Alatau). At the east end of the Talas Alatau the [[Suusamyr Too]] range runs southeast enclosing the [[Suusamyr Valley]] or plateau.

As for the area south of the [[Fergana Valley]] there is a {{convert|800|km}} group of mountains that curves west-southwest from south of Issyk Kul Lake separating the [[Tarim Basin]] from the [[Fergana Valley]]. The [[Fergana Range]] runs northeast towards the Talas Ala-Too and separaties the upper Naryn basin from Fergana proper. The southern side of these mountains merge into the [[Pamirs]] in Tajikistan ([[Alay Mountains]] and [[Trans-Alay Range]]). West of this is the [[Turkestan Range]], which continues almost to Samarkand.

==Ice Age ==
On the north margin of the [[Tarim basin]] between the mountain chain of the [[Kokshaal-Tau]] in the south and that one of the [[Terskey Alatau]] in the north there stretches the 100 to 120 km wide Tian Shan plateau with its set up mountain landscape.The Kokshaal-Tau continues with an overall length of 570 km from W of Pik Dankowa ([[Dankov]], 5986 m) up to east-north-east to Pik Pobedi ([[Tumor Feng]], 7439 m) and beyond it. This mountain chain as well as that of the 300 km long parallel mountain chain of the Terskey Alatau and the Tian Shan plateau situated in between, during glacial times were covered by connected ice-stream-networks and a plateau glacier. Currently the interglacial remnant of this glaciation is formed by the only just 61 km long [[South Inylschek]] glacier. The outlet glacier tongues of the plateau glacier flowed to the north as far as down to Lake [[Issyk Kul]] (Lake) at 1605 (1609) m asl calving in this 160 km long lake.

In the same way strongly glaciated was the in excess of 50 km wide high mountain area of the [[Kungey Alatau]] connected north of Issyk Kul and stretching as far as the mountain foreland near Alma Ata. The Kungey Alatau is 230 km long. Down from the Kungey Alatau the glacial glaciers also calved into the Issyk Kul lake.Its Chon-Kemin valley was glaciated up to its inflow into the Chu valley.<ref name="meteorological1994">Kuhle, M. Altogether the glacial Tian Shan glaciation occupied an area of c. 118 000 km² .The glacier snowline (ELA) as altitude limit between glacier feeding area and melting zone had decreased about 1200 altitude metres compared with today.
Under the condition of a comparable precipitation ratio there would result from this a depression of the average annual temperature of 7.2 to 8.4 °C for the Würm-ice age (Last Glacial period = MIS 2) compared with today.

Special protected areas have been designated in all three nations sharing the Tavan Bogd.

The Mongolian part of the Tavan Bogd massif is within the [[Altai Tavan Bogd National Park]]. The park covers 6,362 km². It includes the lakes Khoton, Khurgan, and Dayan. The protected area offers a home for many species of alpine animal, such as the Argali sheep, Ibex, Red deer, Beech marten, Moose, Snow cock, and Golden eagle.

On the Russian side of the border, the [[Ukok Plateau]], adjacent to the Tavan Bogd massif from the north, is part of the [[UNESCO World Heritage Site]] called the [[Golden Mountains of Altai]].

The Kok-Tobe recreational area has a variety of amusement park type attractions and restaurants. It is connected to downtown Almaty by a [[cable car]] line. The City Terminal is located near [[Hotel Kazakhstan]]. Also, there is a 372 meters tall [[TV Tower]] at the foot of the mountain. The tower can be seen from most parts of the city.

==History==
Kok-Tobe mountain was originally called Verigin until the 1960's. Before the Soviet Union, the Hill was favorite spot for the inhabitants of the city. During the Summer, the civilians organized May Day celebrations. While during winter, it was popular spot for skiing and sledding. Verny merchants called the mountain "Blue Hill" which is believed that the name origins back to medieval times. After Almaty became the capital of [[Kazakh SSR]], Verigin mountain was originally going to become a governmental place which the architects proposed to build several public buildings on the slope, and at the very top of the mountain such as house of the Supreme Council of Kazakh SSR. However plans were not implemented. During the 1950's the mountain became a relaxation spot for the Soviet Elites. Cottages were built for the academics of the Kazakh SSR, as well as later for the first secretary of the Central Committee, [[Dinmukhamed Kunayev]]. Passenger cable way connecting the center of Almaty to the mountain Kok-Tobe was commissioned on November 4, 1967. <ref>http://visitalmaty.kz/z198/</ref> Surprisingly, the cable car worked with little or no maintenance for almost forty years until mid 2000's. In the spring of 2004, after heavy rains on Kok-Tobe was in state of emergency, on the surface of the mountain significant cracks appeared and began to slip and crumble the soil structure. There was a real threat of a landslide in the residential areas nearby. Former Almaty mayor [[Zamanbek Nurkadilov]] decided to close the mountain. In summer of 2004, work began on the reconstructing and strengthening the slope of Kok-Tobe. At the top of moutainn, illegally erected buildings, mostly cafes were removed. Construction workers drilled and concreted 395 wells up to 24 meters. Their main task was to keep the soil from slipping. Cable car and viewing platforms were restored. In 2006, the mountain opened a recreational entertainment center which was the start of Kok-Tobe Park. A Beatles Monument was installed in 2007. In September 2014, the mountain was closed for the purpose of the construction of a new cable car, as well as the reconstruction of the northern side of the mountain and the park. In March 2016, the park completed its construction of the cable car and the park itself was also updated which reopened its doors to visitors. Instead of the two old cable cars, there are now 17 new cable cars. Kok-tobe is connected to Almaty's city centre by a [[rope way]]. Departing point from the city centre is a station located on intersection of Dostyk and Abay avenues. Khan Tengri is one of five peaks that a Soviet mountaineer needed to scale to earn the prestigious [[Snow Leopard award]].

The peak appears on the Kyrgyz 100 [[Som (currency)|som]] bill. In 2004, more than a dozen mountaineers were killed in a large avalanche on the Pogrebetsky route, the most popular route on the mountain.

It is named for three subranges: Baruun Saikhany Nuruu (the ''Western Beauty''), Dund Saikhany Nuruu (the ''Middle Beauty'') and Zuun Saikhany Nuruu (the ''Eastern Beauty'').

The range forms the eastern part of the [[Gobi Gurvansaikhan National Park]].

Belukha is a three-peaked mountain massif that rises along the [[Kazakhstan–Russia border|border]] of [[Russia]] and [[Kazakhstan]], just a few tens of miles north of the point where this border meets with the border of [[China]]. There are several small [[glacier]]s on the mountain, including Belukha Glacier. Of the two peaks, the eastern peak (4,506 m, 14,784 ft.) is higher than the western peak (4,440 m, 14,567 ft.).

Belukha was first climbed in 1914 by the Tronov brothers. Most ascents of the eastern peak follow the same southern route as that taken in the first ascent. Though the Altai is lower in elevation than other Asian mountain groups, it is very remote, and much time and planning are required for its approach.

A team of scientists, traveled to this remote glacier in the summer of 2001 to assess the feasibility of studying the glacier and extracting ice cores at the site. A Swiss-Russian team also worked on the glacier in 2001. Research was carried out from 2001 to 2003; glaciological observations were made, and both shallow cores and cores to bedrock were extracted and analyzed (Olivier and others, 2003; Fujita and others, 2004). Tens of thousands of workers and hundreds of missile experts and army officers arrived after the [[USSR|Soviet]] government decided to establish a secret [[military base]] in the [[Kazakh Steppe]]. This testing site for the soviet [[missile defense]] system was one of such centers, which had led to construction of [[anti-ballistic missile]]s and to attain parity in the [[arms race]] between the [[USSR]] and United States.

After the Soviet Union collapse, the [[Russian Federation]] agreed with [[Kazakhstan]] to lease some military units for 50 years. The [[Russian Ground Forces|Russian Army]] continues to use the base at Priozersk as the testing site for improving anti-ballistic and [[anti-aircraft warfare|anti-aircraft]] defense systems.
