Lira Baysetova is the former editor of the weekly Respublika newspaper of Kazakhstan.

In late May 2002, she found that her 25-year-old daughter Leyla Baysetova had mysteriously disappeared. Reporters Without Borders reported that, during the previous week, the editor had been the subject of specific threats following an interview she had conducted with Geneva general prosecutor, Bernard Bertossa (on 10 May 2002) concerning the Swiss bank accounts of several top Kazakh officials, including President Nursultan Nazarbayev.

A week later, the headless body of a dog was found hanging over the entrance of the offices of another opposition newspaper (Soldat), which was set to publish Baysetova's interview with Bertossa. On 22 May (the day the interview was published), unidentified men attacked Soldats premises, beating up two employees, stealing computers and smashing equipment. The same day, the offices of Respublika in Almaty burned down after Molotov cocktails were thrown into the building. On 16 June, a man claiming to be from the Interior Ministry told Baysetova that her daughter had been arrested for possession of heroin and had subsequently fallen ill. She was not allowed to see her daughter until June 21 when she was informed that she was dead. The circumstances of the case (and particularly Leyla Baysetova's death) remain disputed. The local police authorities claim that she was a drug addict who hanged herself with her jeans in a moment of temporary insanity. However, Kazakh television have questioned the police's findings, stating that no attempts was made to analyze the deceased's blood to determine if she had indeed taken drugs and that no jeans were presented as evidence.

On October 3, 2002 Canadian Journalists for Free Expression (CJFE) awarded an International Press Freedom Award to Baysetova.
Azat Mashurovich Mashurov (Азат Машурович Машуров, March 27, 1940 – April 15, 2000) was a prominent public figure in Kazakhstan's Uyghur community. He served as the First Secretary of the Communist Party of Alakol District in Taldykorgan Province from 1980-1989. He ended his public service career in his home village, Pidgim, in Almaty Province, where he stayed in power until 1995 as Director of the Collective Farm. Mashurov fell victim of Perestroika that first destroyed rural agriculture. He died of a heart attack at age 60 in his home in Zharkent. Makhambet Otemisuly (Махамбет Өтемісұлы Махамбет Утемисов 1803 or 1804–1846, October 20) was a Kazakh poet and political figure. He is best known for his activity as a leader (with friend Isatay Taymanuly) of rebellions against Russian colonialism. This activity is believed to have resulted in his murder in 1846. His first rebellions took place against Zhangir-Kerey Khan of the Bukey Horde. Because the rebellion was badly defeated and a bounty was placed on Utemisov, he had to flee the region.

Makhambet's early education took place at a Russian language school in Orenburg. However, his poetry was more closely tied to Kazakh culture and literary tradition. The major themes of his poetry were of two types: political criticism of Russia or the khan, or more general poetry devoted to themes about human existence and life.
Zhumabay Shayakhmetovich Shayakhmetov, (Жумабай Шаяхметов), (30 August 1902 – 17 October 1966) was a Kazakh Soviet Communist political figure. From 1946 through 1954, he was First Secretary of the Communist Party of the Kazakh SSR.

He was born to a poor peasant family in a small village in Borisov County (okrug), which in 1924 was incorporated as one of the nine rural areas in the Sherbakulsky District of the Omsk Oblast. In 1915, he went to the two-year Kazakh-Russian school in what is now the Poltava Raion, graduating in 1917. He attended the Narimanov Institute in Moscow, but did not complete his first year. In 1919, he got a job as a school teacher in a rural school, but the school closed due to the civil war and he returned to his home.

From 1919 to 1926, Shayakhmetov was the secretary of the Turkoman Rural District executive committee of the GPU. By 1923, he was already a first-rate agent, solving crimes in the Cherlaksky District, Omsk Oblast. From 1926 to 1928, Shayakhmetov taught office management (official documentation) as the political instructor in a rural organization called "Koschi" in the Petropavl Okrug. From 1928 to 1938, he worked for the NKVD, first as Deputy Department Chief for the North Kazakhstan Oblast, then as the Deputy Department Chief for the Alma Ata Oblast.

From 1938 to 1946, Shayakhmetov worked his way up from Third Secretary to First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Kazakh SSR. He was the first ethnic Kazakh to hold that post. In March 1954, Shayakhmetov was replaced as First Secretary by Panteleimon Kondratyevich Ponomarenko, a Russian, as part of Khrushchev's post-Stalin reorganization. For about a year, well into 1955, he was the First Secretary of the South Kazakhstan provincial committee of the Communist Party of Kazakhstan, before he was removed from that post as well.

He served as Chairman of the Soviet of Nationalities (1950–1954).
Oromo (оромо, oromo) or Orama (орама, u̯ʊrɑmɑ) is a traditional steamed pie made in Central Asia, especially among the Kyrgyz and the Kazakhs. The name comes from a nominalisation of the word "to roll"/"to wrap", referring to how the food is made.

The dough for orama is made from flour, water, and salt. It is kneaded and rolled thin, and a filling is spread over it. The filling may contain minced potatoes, minced animal fat, and sometimes minced pumpkin or some other vegetable. The dough is then rolled around the filling in sections so as to create a long, thin wrap. The wraps are laid in a circle in steamer pots and steamed.
The emblem of the Commonwealth of Independent States (Флаг Содружества Независимых Государств) depicts a yellow sun on a dark blue field, with eight bending poles holding the sun.

Description
The poles represent the CIS members, who signed the New Union treaty on December 21, 1991 (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan). The design (which reflects the one of the flag of the Commonwealth) symbolizes the desire for equal partnership, unity, peace and stability.
For a Just Kazakhstan (also known as For a Fair Kazakhstan) (Ediletti Qazaqstan Ushin) is a political movement that was founded by the Communist Party of Kazakhstan, the Naghyz Ak Zhol Party and the Democratic Choice of Kazakhstan Party as an opposition coalition to nominate a single candidate in the 2005 presidential elections.

The movement is led by Zharmakhan Tuyakbay, the former speaker of the Majlis of Kazakhstan and the resigned deputy chairman of OTAN party. Tuyakbay resigned from his parliamentary post after 2004 parliamentary elections citing widespread irregularities and election fraud. He joined the loose opposition bloc and became the coalition's candidate for the presidential elections. After the elections, he founded the Nationwide Social Democratic Party in September 2006.

For a Just Kazakhstan advocates democratization of the political system, election of regional governors, investigation of corruption cases involving the family of the president Nazarbayev and the fair redistribution of national wealth.
