== History ==
The airport was built in 1934, and moved to its current location 10 years later. In 1980 it underwent major reconstruction, including construction of a new terminal building and modernization of the runway. This made landing of heavier aircraft possible and opened the door to many new destinations in the [[Soviet Union]].

In 1992 the airport was granted an international status. It has become an independent [[joint stock company]] after separation from JSC "Karagandaavia" in 1997. It is not related to [[Saryarka – Steppe and Lakes of Northern Kazakhstan]] on the [[World Heritage List]].

Until 1999 The airport was part of [[Irtysh Avia]] airline. Since 2000 it was under control of [[Pavlodar oblast]] akimat, and in 2006 was transferred to [[Samruk-Kazyna]] holding.

This airport has two terminals – domestic and international. The airport also serves the nearby town of Aksai, which provides the majority of Ak Zhol passenger traffic, being the "capital" of the gas industry in West Kazakhstan. In the past, a weekly international charter flight was operated by [[Astraeus Airlines]] from Oral to [[London Gatwick]]/[[London Stansted]]; this was subsequently operated by [[Air Astana]] to [[Amsterdam]]; however the route was terminated, along with other Air Astana flights, due to the poor condition of the runway. The airport runway and facilities were inspected by [[Mott MacDonald]] to confirm that its substandard condition prevented the airport from accommodating larger jet aircraft. On 17 April 2013 the decision was made to transfer the airport's ownership back to the government for runway reconstruction.

The No 12 municipal bus line connects Ak Zhol International airport with centrally located Uralsk train station. Service is available from 06:00 to 22:00 daily.

*On 15 April 2006 a [[British Airways]] [[Boeing 747]] operating as flight number BA10 from Sydney to London via [[Bangkok]] with 354 passengers and 18 crew made an emergency landing at Uralsk Airport after a fire warning light went on in the cockpit. Although the only airport's landing strip is certified for operation of medium-sized aircraft the crew managed to perform a safe landing. There were no fatalities or reportable injuries, however the airport did not have the correct size of air stairs to reach the aircraft doors, the largest passenger aircraft that had operated on a regular basis previously had been a [[Air Astana]] [[Boeing 757]]. ==Future plans and expansion==
In November 1996 the joint stock company "Aktau International Airport" was established. The development of the oil industry in the [[Caspian Depression|Caspian region]] required an increase in freight volumes and a rapid delivery of necessary equipment for the oil industry. This, in turn, led to the need for reconstruction of the airfield and an increase in passenger capacity at the terminal.

In 2007 the airport was given a concession period of 30 years to the ATM Group. The contract includes construction of a new passenger terminal.

The new terminal was completed in 2009. The capacity was 450 passengers per hour and the total area of {{Convert|13400|m2|abbr=on}}, including the area occupied by the VIP and CIP halls. The terminal is equipped with electronic and electromechanical systems. These include passenger telescopic ladders, racks of electronic registration, HVAC (heating and cooling system), FIDS (Alert System departures on the electronic scoreboard), X-ray scanners, CCTV, lifts and escalators.

Aerodrome Aktau class B can receive aircraft AN-124, Boeing-747-200, IL-76 and lighter, as well as helicopters of all types.

There are only a few international carriers which fly to Aktau. SCAT airline is based in Aktau. Air Astana operates its flights from Almaty and Astana to Aktau daily, along with 2 weekly Almaty-Aktau-Istanbul flights and return service. From international carriers, the most frequent airline is AZAL (Azerbaijan Airlines) which is operating daily Trans-Caspiy flights to Baku. There are also twice weekly flights operated by SCAT to Moscow Domodedovo. SCAT makes a good regional connection with Russian towns and Caucasus. This includes flights from Aktau to the capital of Georgia; Tbilisi. These are operated 3 times a week and only by SCAT with a CRJ-200.
