He played for the Seibu Prince Rabbits between 2006 and 2009; for the German second division team ESV Kaufbeuren in 2009–10; and since 2010–11 for the Tohoku Free Blades. He was the Asia League 2010–11 leading scorer with 59 points.

He also has played for the Japan national team since 2003 (Japan U20 and Senior).

Tanaka was the country's flagbearer during the 2017 Asian Winter Games parade of nations at the opening ceremony.[1]
