She is an active member of the [[Green Party (Czech Republic)|Strana zelených]] (Czech Green Party) and from 2007 to 2009, Stehlíková was the Minister for Human Rights and Minorities.

Stehlíková is a [[Naturalization|naturalized]] [[Czech nationality law|Czech citizen]] by marriage. On 17 February 1992, Stehlíková was sworn in as a Czech citizen.
